Christians were subjected to a tremendous amount of oppression from Roman troops, as the official religion in Rome was only one. When communities are persecuted for their beliefs, they must relocate so that they can obtain more flexible housing.

Between the second and fourth centuries, a significant Christian community fled to Cappadocia as a result of persecution. These people built little church-like structures in several monasteries. The monastery complex in Goreme Open Air Museum is one such example. There were originally 34 churches, but 9 remain part of the museum today.

Goreme Open Air Museum is located between 1km to 2km depending on the location of your hotel in Goreme, so it is quite walkable taking about 20-30 minutes to get there. The walk offers quite an amazing view, so it is highly recommended to walk to the museum if you are not joining any tours.
