Turkey has one of the highest rates of alcohol use in the Middle East. Turkey is a secular state, and although most people are Muslim, raki, which is an alcoholic beverage, plays an important role in Turkish cuisine. Alcohol was widely consumed during the Ottoman Empire.
Alcohol consumption rises in metropolitan areas and falls in traditional rural communities. Turkish west areas, on the other hand, have a greater alcohol consumption per person than the most conservative Turkish east regions.
