The region of Cappadocia is known for its subterranean safe cities cut from soft tuff. Every year, tourists from all over the world go on a mysterious journey through these underground cities, which are among Cappadocia’s most fascinating cultural riches.
Starting from 01st century, Christians utilized underground cities in Cappadocia as hiding places. These subterranean settlements featured granaries, stables, rooms, kitchens, and ventilation systems. The most famous underground cities unearthed so far in Cappadocia are located at Derinkuyu, Kaymakli, Tatlarin, Ozkonak, Mazi ,and Ozluce. In 1985, UNESCO inscribed Derinkuyu Underground City and Kaymakli Underground City on the World Heritage List.
There are 36 underground cities, excavated and opened to visitors, in Cappadocia so far, but it is believed that much more than this number are waiting to be discovered.
