Christians were subjected to a tremendous amount of oppression from Roman troops, as the official religion in Rome was only one. When communities are persecuted for their beliefs, they must relocate so that they can obtain more flexible housing.

Between the second and fourth centuries, a significant Christian community fled to Cappadocia as a result of persecution. These people built little church-like structures in several monasteries. The monastery complex in Goreme Open Air Museum is one such example. There were originally 34 churches, but 9 remain part of the museum today. One of these churches are the Dark Church which is actually the best-preserved church in Cappadocia region. There is an entrance of 30 Turkish Lira per person for this church.
